Biodiversity monitoring at Bekina

Manufacturing sites typically conjure visions of grey, industrial surroundings. At Bekina, nothing could be further from the truth. In recent years, we have succeeded in creating an attractive, green environment that is in keeping with the Flemish Ardennes and a boost for our region’s biodiversity. Our company premises consequently form a green corridor that connects various nature zones.

The green appearance of our company premises is the result of various measures. We commissioned the construction of additional wadis and provided a pool for insects and amphibians to thrive in, for example. Our sites also feature trees, wildflower meadows and a dead hedge for hedgehogs and other wildlife. A biologist makes regular visits to inventorise the invertebrates and has identified no fewer than seventeen different bird species. We also provided the patio with more greenery and freed up space for nature by removing paving.

This focus on green surroundings is an ode to nature and a stimulus for our employees. Bekina also promotes a number of ecological projects in the company’s wider vicinity. The Vanderbeke family supplied the much-cherished 350 oak trees that have lined an approach road to the village since 2010 for example (between Zulzeke and Berchem).

Long periods of drought are making water a scarce and increasingly precious resource. A resource that we therefore plan to use sparingly. This starts with obtaining a clear overview of our water consumption. In addition to the installation of outflow meters on our outgoing water flows, we also requested a water scan from VLAIO. This gives us a clear picture of our water consumption and, in particular, where that consumption takes place and how we can reduce it. We will subsequently use these insights and tips to make various improvements. We also use wadis for water buffering and water infiltration on our sites. We want to make surplus water available to local residents. Because we believe that together we can have a greater impact.
